Decorative half timbering popping against stucco clad exteriors – that’s mostly how a builder would visualize this type of house. Use siding materials like brick exterior, stone, cedar, shingles etc to do justice to the archetypical style. For the exterior color palette, your choices are wide open, ranging from brown, tan, mahogany and the like.

On the other hand, you could also hang up large, old, oil paintings, animal sketches or paintings of animals that hail from the region. Use plenty of mirrors wherever possible, with royal framing and in traditional shapes. Traditional English color palette takes inspiration from the natural surroundings, and builds on it with chalky neutrals, off-white, ochre, neutral woods, torp and country greys. They are complemented by forest and khaki greens, muted yellows, oranges, reds, soft blues, and faded pinks in all decor pieces. For depth and contrast, go with deep brown, mahogany, along with warm brass, bronze and navy blues.

Once you've installed your beams, add coffered ceiling tiles to complete the look. Stained glass windows are an underrated feature that can make any home look charming, timeless, and classic. Another idea is to place an attractive chandelier to draw the attention upwards and make the space feel even larger than it actually is.

Arrange groups of potted plants, knickknacks, or travel souvenirs on these trays. There are a couple of reasons why rich and elaborate drapes complement Tudor-style design. First and foremost, their natural weight adds depth and texture to the room. According to SFGate, combining velvet sofas and silk drapes will create a luxurious look. For something softer and more romantic, choose long curtains and let them pool on the floor to create a Bridgerton vibe in your home.

If you are looking to create the look and feel of the old world on your home and need ideas, here are 20 of the most gorgeous Tudor style homes anywhere. Stucco or stone walls are typical of the English style Tudor, and in some areas, you may even see some with thatched roofs, which really give them an authentic look, and a striking appeal. The colors, brown, buff and cream are common, and fairly standard colors used on Tudors. This elaborate style of house eventually went out of fashion after WWII when tight budgets demanded a simple way of life. If you drive through an older suburban neighborhood, it's easy to designate a street that was built pre-WWII or post-WWII. Before the war, you would find a lot of brick Tudors but in the 1950s, many of these homes were replaced with efficient and straightforward Cape Cod-style homes.

The designer established two seating areas within the space, including a cozy gathering spot with chaise longues that flank the original carved marble fireplace. The room’s coffered ceilings were enhanced with a faux-wood decorative painting by Jhon Ardilla. Dark wood flooring is best for these homes, as they offset the height of the ceiling, and make the place feel not too cold or hot – just the right ambiance for an intimate gathering. For the entire house, if your client isn’t hell bent on a particular type of flooring, best to go with parquet or simple tongue and groove flooring in living and dining spaces.

Key Characteristics of Tudor-Style Homes

A fourth-generation Los Angeles native, Interior Designer Oliver M. Furth is a fixture in his city.

Tudor Style House Features

This led to the style fizzling out after World War II, when the country turned its attention to focus on new, affordable housing developments that could be built quickly. During the height of the colonial revival period (1910–1940), "this style comprised 25 percent of the suburban houses built," Pennoyer says. The unique style is still an appealing option for some buyers who want to own a historic home as it has proven to be worth the investment once the time and budget are spent reviving the structure. Get Melissa's weekly rundown of where top interior designers source their things and find inspiration - that will instantly transform your pad. Since founding her eponymous design firm in 2004, Carrie Livingston has been traveling the world, finding unique, one-of-a-kind pieces to create stunning residential and commercial projects globally.

The windows of this home include a lot of casements, another characteristic of the style. Architectural historians will tell you Tudor style has no fixed rules. The English prototype sprang from the introduction of the chimney stack, and the varied look of the style's myriad rooflines and quaint windows was a balancing act around interior heat sources. On this charming Tudor's facade, crude mortar joints between bricks amplify the home's timeworn appeal. The path passes through a flower-covered arbor and leads to an arched entrance. Patterned brickwork combined with black half-timbering adds visual interest to the home's facade.

Today, Waterleaf has completed projects ranging from beach cottages along the California coast to a penthouse in Singapore. Their clean, timeless, and classic style is also reflected in their store located in the heart of Manhattan Beach. Designer Lara Hovanessian packed plenty of bold design elements into the powder room and adjacent lounge.

When a person makes reference to the Tudors, we might immediately think of Henry VIII and the wives he treated so miserably. However, most people might not be aware that during the time Henry sat upon the British throne, a very distinct style of architecture came into vogue. The Tudor and Tudor-style aesthetic was so prevalent internationally for so many years, that the chances of you having been exposed to it is almost certainly 100 percent. With the help of ELLE Decor A-List designer Steven Gambrel and his wealth of knowledge, we’ve pulled together a primer (do you feel like you’re back in English school?) on Tudor-style homes. The windows on this solarium repeat the Gothic arches and diamond-shaped panes that prevail throughout the rest of the Tudor-style home.

“I’m all about gardens connecting the architecture into the landscape,” landscape architect Timothy John Palcic tells AD PRO. He used a limited palette of chartreuse and dark hues that nod to the brick exterior and arranged benches to create intimate seating areas within the larger English-garden-inspired space. A brick-walled patio became a party-ready outdoor kitchen and dining area thanks to Douglas R. Sanicola of Outdoor Elegance. Sanicola and Monique Wood installed Caesarstone countertops fabricated by Carlito’s Way Stone to create a functional space for outdoor entertaining. “I really feel like the dining room is a forgotten room,” says the designer, who set out to prove how vital the space is to a home. The room is anchored by a Riva 1920 table made with the wood of a 50,000-year-old Kauri tree, which Levine surrounded with seating for 12.

Another seating area with views of the garden was designed for more intimate dining, games, or meetings, and it’s illuminated by a Murano glass chandelier. At the far end of the room, Levine installed a lush purple sofa with cocktail tables, creating the perfect spot for drinks, dessert, or relaxing with a cup of coffee. The Dahlia Tudor style, with its charming architectural features, brings a timeless allure to the bungalow setting, creating a home that is both distinctive and welcoming.

How to Apply Gold Leaf: A Beginner-Friendly Guide

gold leaf design

The finished appearance can range from highly polished to matte, and can involve decorative glazes or patinas. In addition, specialty coatings can add a layer of protection and prevent tarnishing. Once you're happy with the final gold leaf design, apply the sealer. This will protect and permanently set the gold leaf to your DIY project. Prepare your plate or another decor item by cleaning and/or sanding the surface you plan to embellish. If your item has a more porous surface, you may need to apply a sealer before starting with the gold leaf.

Create art without limits

The inherent allure of gold leaf does not simply hinge on its radiant beauty, but equally upon the skill and knowledge required to manipulate it. Attention to minute detail, understanding of the peculiar properties of the gold leaf and competent handling are crucial while exploring this artistic dominion. Principal focus lies also in the proper application methods and strategies that involve preparation of surfaces, correct use of adhesive, timely laying of the leaf, polishing and potential reparations. Ultimately, the true essence of a gold leaf painting transcends its physical attributes and relies heavily on the underlying design and composition.

Selecting the Right Materials

Use our step-by-step guide to decorate your DIY projects with gold leaf. All types of gold leafing, silver leafing, platinum leafing, copper leafing, palladium leafing and dutch metal (composition) leafing. The heart of the process now begins, brandishing the gold leaf. Gold leaf is incredibly thin and thus requires handling with utmost care. The preferred method is to use a gilder’s tip, a flat natural brush to lift the leaf.

Once dried, you can apply the gold leaf using craft tweezers for small spaces or cut the leaf sizing to fit your sized area before applying. If the gold sheet is too big, you can tear off a smaller amount before sizing. Gold leaf will only stick to the areas that have been sized, so it’s best to make sure your surface is smooth and even.

Guide to Mont Marte sketch books and papers

This gentle whisking motion deflects any loose or overlapping pieces. It needs to reach the state of ‘tackiness’ to secure the gold leaf properly – neither too wet nor too dry. Be keen to follow the manufacturer’s guide concerning the open time for the specific ‘size’ you are using. It dances in the light, dazzling with an ancient, luxurious appeal—one might even say—and we wouldn’t be wrong—that this is literal sunshine in art. This is the irrefutable magic of gold leaf, a material that has created some of the most captivating works in the history of art.

Green Wall, Mini Alocasia 1

However, breaking down the process reveals a series of simple steps. Begin with a clear image in mind – think about how the golden glow will tie your elements together, where it will catch the light, and how it will enhance the work’s overall ambience. Which surface you choose to embellish with the lustrous glow of gold leaf can make all the difference. Whether you are decorating a canvas, a wooden frame or paper, ensure your surface is clean, smooth and free from dust. You want to handle the material as little as possible, so using tweezers or another application tool is recommended. Today, many contemporary creatives continue to use gold leaf in their work.

If you have no experience gilding, using gold leaf in your own practice may seem intimidating. However, with just a few simple steps, you can transform a completed painting into a transcendent masterpiece. The process of pounding solid gold into a thin leaf is called goldbeating, and the act of using gold leaf to adorn a surface is called gilding. Gilding is the technique of applying a very thin layer of gold or silver leaf onto a surface.

Patience is a virtue that should be exercised here as rushing can yield unprofessional results. Its aesthetic qualities and enduring characteristic has seen this material embraced across a variety of artistic mediums and explored by various formidable artists. In the 1700s, there were about 300 artisans making gold leaf in the city. Now there is just Marino Menegazzo, who is also one of very few remaining in Europe. Various forms of printmaking have also taken advantage of gold leaf. Letterpress, for instance, has seen a resurgence in using this medium to elevate typed words into luxurious statements.

You can sand down the wood, using a fine, grit sandpaper or gesso can be used before sizing. (Keeping in mind, the gold leaf will only stick to the areas that have been sized). Like non-porous surfaces, make sure your surface is clean and free from any dirt or dust. It’s best to apply a smooth, even amount of sizing to make sure a) the sizing doesn’t soak into your paper and b) so that the gold leaf sticks to the sizing evenly.

Peerlessly beautiful, the gold leaf bit provides an explosion of brilliance wherever it touches – its undeniable allure penetrates the world of art, transforming good into exceptional, and ordinary into extraordinary. Now that we’ve addressed the characteristics and historical value of gold leaf, let’s dive into the artistic process of harnessing its beauty through painting. Once the leaf has been applied, use a gilder’s mop to lightly brush over the surface.

"In the past for projects I've done, the insides of lampshades [are] really pretty because then you get that really gold glow when the light is on. I've also done frames and mirrors and things like that," Aragon explains. It’s advisable to work with oil-based adhesive for a longer open time. Manufactured specifically for metal leaf work, such as gold, it secures the leaf brilliantly and provides extended tack time. Right after adhering the gold leaf to your surface, the gilder’s mop, a large, soft, round brush, is utilised to softly brush over the leaf.

Keep in mind that some types of gold leaf, like pure form, require careful consideration of the sealant to avoid tarnishing. Finally, sealing the gold leaf with varnish is a key step, particularly for pieces likely to be exposed to touch or environmental elements. However, remember that some gold leaf, particularly 24-carat varieties, does not need sealing. To further smooth and ensure adherence of the leaf to the surface, burnishing comes into play.

You can remove excess gold leaf to create gold leaf flakes by using a soft, taklon brush after sizing, and brushing the gold from side to side, to remove the gold pieces. Alternatively, you can trim the gold leaf sheets before applying them to the sizing. Then using a clean, taklon brush, brush from one side to another to stick the gold leaf. The natural oils in your hands can cause gold leaf to discolour, so wearing a pair of lightweight, cotton gloves, apply the gold leaf to the area that has been sized.

"Definitely make sure you're in a room that doesn't have a lot of wind or airflow because the sheets are super thin and very delicate," she says. "A little bit of breeze kind of blows it…. Just be patient and careful." Prop stylist and former Martha Stewart Living home editor Lorna Aragon has never seen anyone gild their floors before, but she is very experienced with gilding and every which way you can do it. "There are quite a few different types of products you can use to get [the desired] effect," Aragon tells House Beautiful. While the main two methods people tend to use are gold leaf sheets and gold paint, Aragon prefers the sheets because they "come out shinier" than the paint does.

Looking forward to next year’s job search, this has really helped me narrow down the kinds of opportunities that I’m excited about, and I look forward to finding a job that is aligned with my desire to have an impact. Professionals of all backgrounds and industries, regardless of where they are in their careers, are welcome to attend this workshop. The course was originally listed at $199, but lately, it's discounted to $29. Once you buy it, you get lifetime, on-demand access to the course and its materials.

Unlearning 2: There is a single perfect job out there for me.

The concept of a learning versus an unlearning is described well below from the assignment instructions. The main revisions I’ve made are primarily to provide additional context for those not familiar with the course. Based on content from our Life Design courses, these animated videos are a resource for vocational wayfinding and career education. You can expect 3-5 hours of homework each week in addition to the 2 hours of class. Aside from some light reading and videos, homework will have you out in the world doing things and then reflecting on those experiences.

AsteriskBelén García López & Andres TaberaUniversity of Navarra, SpainAsterisk is a modular board game designed for individuals with dementia that focuses on cognitive stimulation and fine motor skills. The idea here is that as we grow and learn, some new ideas that come to us require not only learning, but unlearning as well. Some new ideas and information can enter into our awareness in a perfectly compatible and friendly way, and everything that was already in place previously stays put (learnings). In other cases, the new information overlaps current understanding or even directly contradicts it, requiring something to get materially edited, rearranged, or evicted altogether (unlearnings).

This online course uses a design thinking approach to help people of any age and academic background develop a constructive and effective approach to designing their vocation. This course is primarily comprised of 5 career-oriented vocational way-finding concepts, illustrated through videos and expanded through personal reflections and exercises. The competition encourages students from any university in the world to enter their solution in competition for a $10,000 first prize and paid travel to Stanford to present to an audience of academics, investors, and corporate sponsors. In addition to travel support, all finalists received a $1000 award, pairing with an experienced mentor, and a half-day entrepreneurial workshop in which they are introduced to ideas and resources about how to take their product or service to market. The entire competition is industry-sponsored and free to enter, enabling students from all circumstances to participate.

DAYS

By the end of the course, students will be able to articulate their own life philosophy and use it to help them confidently make life’s big decisions in high school, college, and beyond. This idea is one that had made committing to an internship offer tough. Since I couldn’t evaluate all of my options at once (ie once you get an offer you usually have 2 weeks to make a decision), it was difficult to be confident that I was making the best decision, and that bothered me somewhat. I had the idea that there was an objective best opportunity out there for me, but I had no way of knowing whether my current offer was that best opportunity or how far off my current offer was from the best possible opportunity. However, through DYL and some of the conversations it spurred, I’ve realized that that single best opportunity doesn’t exist.

Most critically, how do you leave Stanford after four years feelings satisfied with the experience? Designing Your Stanford aims to help students navigate these thorny questions. Using a process rooted in Design Thinking, the course equips students with tools to design a college experience that better aligns with who they are and what they hope to get from Stanford. Kathy has 15 years of industry experience developing electromechanical and software products, and proudly holds five patents. She consults with Silicon Valley companies, teaches design thinking, conducts ethnographic research, and develops product strategies and concepts. Her prior experience as an engineer and product manager and leader of engineering teams gives her particular skill in understanding and connecting with technical audiences as they learn life design tools.

Resources

At the end of the day, it’s our strengths that will be the main drivers of our success, and you can surround yourself with people who complement your skills to mitigate your weaknesses. Over the course of the past year, I’ve been asked what my 10-year plan is over and over again, whether it be in interviews for internships, informational interviews, or just through networking and sharing that I’m finishing up college. I never really knew what to say, and based on these conversations, it seemed like not having a compelling answer was problematic. These were the kinds of questions I had started to ask myself. Some videos have built-in exercises, like creating your own "love, play, work, health" balance sheet to reframe how you view your life. Since it was filmed live, you also get to passively experience an in-person classroom by listening to participants' thoughts and questions.

It also does a good job of combining new concepts with actionable ways to apply them to your life ASAP. This feels less like an academic course and more like an intimate TED talk. The way the class is structured into short videos makes the concepts more memorable and the pace effortless; I always wanted to keep watching. According to Dave Evans and Bill Burnett, two Stanford University design theory experts, that's one question we'll never get to stop asking. Take the online course with Life Design Lab Co-Founders, Bill Burnett and Dave Evans, via a CreativeLive class.

Most importantly, the course is for students who want to engage with ideas and their peers and mentors in an honest effort in thinking about their lives. If you’re just curious about how we go about this, but don’t have much interest in applying it yourself, then it may not be for you. Much of the work occurs in class, so if you don’t plan to attend all classes, or can’t commit to engaging with your peers each week around the work, this also might not be a good fit. Train with Kathy Davies, Susan Burnett and a community of other seasoned facilitators and public speakers to become officially certified as a commercial workshop facilitator and provider. Catherine has reinvented herself and pivoted on numerous occasions and in several countries starting in her early adult life and well into the current chapter of her odyssey. Her life design journey started when she decided to leave the nest (Guam) to attend university in the US ‘mainland’, changing majors in college as a biology major (pre-dentistry!) then switching when she took the leap to study abroad in Spain.

A modular board game designed for individuals with dementia won the $10,000 grand prize on Tuesday, April 9, 2024, in the Stanford Center on Longevity’s eleventh annual design challenge. Over the course of the competition, this team beat out over 220 entries from 34 countries, winning the $10,000 grand prize. In many subjects in school (math, science, etc.), we’re pushed to find the correct answer the first time.

There are many great opportunities that fit my interests and objectives, but after a certain point the experience will be what I make of it, so it’s pointless to question whether an opportunity is the absolute best I could have been offered. If it’s a role in an interesting space that will give me a significant opportunity to both learn and make an impact, that’s something I can be confident signing up for. Thus, to embrace this idea, I had to unlearn the idea that I needed to have the next 10 years figured out, and guest speakers’ experiences really demonstrated the value of not having or following a plan. Now, I’m comfortable not having a confident answer for what I want to be doing 10 years from now and am solely focused on determining what makes the most sense for the next couple of years. Over the course of the quarter, we completed a variety of assignments. Several were focused around journaling (logging screen time over the course of the week, reflecting on moments of being stuck, moments of gratitude, moments of flow, etc.).

You can get the experience of learning from a community without being put on the spot yourself. Design thinking is action-biased, which is why this recorded class is interactive. But, you won't be able to participate as actively or pose your own questions as the live audience did. The class is broken up into 21 bite-sized videos (the longest is about 30 minutes) of a live lecture given by Burnett and Evans to a small crowd. It's engaging and interactive; while you're not in the room, you can watch short snippets of group interactions among the participants.

Check out their Career MythBusting Campaign that help students to reframe dysfunctional career myths. Kathy Davies is the Managing Director of the Life Design Lab at Stanford University, where she teaches Product Design and life design courses, and shares life design trainings with educators globally. She is also the co-founder of Designing Your Life Consulting and a commercial Master Trainer. From the StrengthsFinder assessment, it was interesting to learn that it’s generally more valuable to focus on your strengths to go from good to great in a particular area than to work on improving a weakness from poor to mediocre. This does make sense, as you’ll be able to improve faster in something that you’re already skilled at, but it wasn’t an idea that I had really thought about before completing the assessment. This doesn’t mean that we should ignore our weaknesses, but rather to be conscious of how we invest time between working on our strengths vs working on our weaknesses.

Sixth person dies from injuries suffered in Pennsylvania house explosion

Emergency responders reported people trapped under debris after one house apparently exploded and two others were engulfed in flames, county spokesperson Amie Downs said. At least a dozen other houses were damaged in some way, Plum police said. Steve Imbarlina, the assistant chief for Allegheny County emergency services, said that two of the injured people had been released from the hospital and a third was in critical condition on Sunday afternoon. Heather Oravitz, 51, community development director for the borough, lived in the house that exploded and was killed, the Plum Borough mayor confirms. Her husband, Paul Oravitz, was in the hospital in critical condition but later died from his injuries, sources tell Channel 11. Plum officials are notifying Rustic Ridge homeowners whose houses were substantially damaged by the house explosion there two weeks ago that they may be eligible for a significant reduction in their property assessment.

WTAE Pittsburgh

That determination came after all potential outside factors such as wells, pipeline, ground gas propagation and other utilities were inspected and tested at several levels by each of the various agencies and companies investigating the explosion. A previous update provided by emergency officials on Saturday night can be seen below. Water tankers were at the scene, as many local fire departments continued to respond. Allegheny County Emergency Management officials were also at the scene. Zarroli and his wife first lived in another house in Rustic Ridge. The houses on either side — the Thomas house closer to Zarroli and the home of Harrison and Kelly Smith on the other side — also were destroyed.

The Allegheny County fire marshal’s office is leading the investigation, along with local law enforcement. Additionally, safety engineers have closely monitored the safe restoration of electric and natural gas service to undamaged homes in the neighborhood. Construction crews worked throughout the night, boarding up windows and doors of homes damaged by the blast, according to residents who stayed in their homes despite having no electric or natural gas service.

However, an unknown number of those may be able to be repaired and lived in again, as long as they are determined to be structurally safe. Since the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office released the scene, it’s been cleaned up and sold, with a new house expected to be built there, said Greg Fischer, who lives across the street. A lot on Hialeah Drive in Plum’s Holiday Park neighborhood where a house exploded and burned in April 2022 is just a grassy space between two other homes today.

Officials were back at the scene Sunday morning, and a news conference was scheduled for noon, the Facebook post said. He said that gas and electrical services were shut off to most of the area Saturday "out of an abundance of caution" and that officials planned to work to restore some of the services. Two were stable when they were transported and were released, and the third was in critical condition, they said. Emergency medical workers treated 57 firefighters for minor issues while they responded to the explosion and fire, Chief Imbarlina said.

It is our collective responsibility to ensure the emotional well-being of our students and families as we navigate this unimaginable tragedy. In 2008, a house exploded along Mardi Gras Drive in Plum, killing a man and seriously injuring a 4-year-old girl. The National Transportation Safety Board investigated and discovered it was caused by a two-inch gas line that was damaged and then failed five years later after it corroded. The fire marshal is still investigating last year’s house explosion in Plum along Hialeah Drive. The Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s office has confirmed the house that exploded had hot water tank issues.

The accounts can be found at under the names of Danielle DiVittorio and Bryan Corbett. Killed in the Aug. 12 blast were borough manager Michael Thomas; borough Community development director Heather Oravitz and her husband, Paul, Kevin Sebunia and Casey and Keegan Clontz. While the exact cause of the blast has yet to be determined, "all findings to date that there are no factors external to the home that exploded that led to the explosion," the fire marshal's office said in a release. The initial update provided by emergency officials on Saturday afternoon can be seen below.

Electric service to all but the most damaged homes was restored Sunday afternoon. Two others were treated and released from hospitals, said Steve Imbarlina, deputy director of fire and emergency medical services for Allegheny County. The cause of the explosion is under investigation by the county fire marshal's office along with borough and county law enforcement. Imbarlina warned that the investigation would be a "slow and long process" that would include a lot of forensic testing and could last "months if not years." Upon arriving at the scene, authorities found people trapped under debris and reported that it appeared that one house had exploded while two others were "engulfed in fire," police said.

PLUM BOROUGH, Pa. — Six people are dead after an explosion on Rustic Ridge Drive in Plum Borough that destroyed three homes and damaged at least a dozen more. The Fire Marshal’s Office also encouraged homeowners to install combustible gas detectors and reminded residents that if they smell natural gas to not turn on appliances or light switches and exit the home and go to a safe area away from the house. People should call 911 and the gas company from outside the house, not reenter it and wait for first responders to arrive. Gov. Josh Shapiro announced Thursday he was ordering the state Department of Environmental Protection to open its own investigation into the Rustic Ridge explosion. Plum is home to several gas wells, a natural gas pipeline, abandoned mines and a long-burning underground mine fire.

Renko is the president of the Rustic Ridge homeowners association. He and the rest of the board — as well as a number of neighbors who live in the immediate vicinity and just outside of it within the subdivision — have taken the lead in trying to pull the community forward. Rogers said firefighters allowed him to go back in quickly and rescue his dog. Sims said tanker trucks hauled in water and pumper engines got the water to the fire scene via portable dunk tanks. There were 18 fire departments that responded, according to Plum police. Shortly after 8 p.m., Walker said Duquesne Light has conducted the necessary inspections and was waiting for approval from the building inspector, fire marshal and gas company to restore power to the affected customers. He and a neighbor, Renko, went to the house before the flames became out of control. They went around to the backyard and found a man lying in the yard.

The cause of the explosion is under investigation by Plum and county law enforcement agencies and the county fire marshal’s office. The state Public Utility Commission and local utilities also were at the scene. Additionally, safety engineers have been monitoring the restoration of electric service to homes in the area that were not directly impacted by the explosion – as well as the planning and safe restoration of natural gas service to residents. Of the three people taken to hospitals, two were released while one remained in critical condition, said Steve Imbarlina, deputy director of fire and emergency services for Allegheny County.

Peoples Natural Gas said Saturday night on its website that it shut off gas service to about 50 homes in the area as a precaution. First responders found people trapped under debris and two homes "engulfed in fire," in addition to one that appeared to have exploded and multiple others with the windows blown out, according to the post. The police responded to a report of a house explosion around 10 a.m. In Plum, a borough in Allegheny County in western Pennsylvania just east of Pittsburgh. In addition to those resources, the Plum Senior High School is open Monday and Tuesday, offering support services for students, staff, and community members.

Those in Plum might have encountered Heather as the director of community development for the borough. This little corner of Rustic Ridge was known, at least by some neighbors, as Fraternity Row, because these families spent so much time together. Plum Borough School District, the University of Pittsburgh MAPS program, Alliance of Therapy Dogs and others have offered services or assistance to those who are emotionally impacted by the tragedy. Renton Volunteer Fire Department served as the staging area for collecting relief items. Mountains of bottled water, food and snacks piled up at the fire department in the days after the explosion. The borough announced that all events scheduled for Monday are canceled.

One leak was along Kathy Lynn Drive and the other was at Crestview and Mower drives. The Regency Park and Rustic Ridge neighborhoods are about a 10-minute drive apart. To this point, there are holds on the three destroyed properties. This means nothing will be done to them, and any demolition would have to be approved by the borough. "In the meantime, we are bringing all of our resources to bear to help the Allegheny County fire marshal," Peoples Gas President Mike Huwar said.

Three nearby homes were destroyed and a dozen other homes were damaged in the blast on Saturday. Borough Manager Michael Thomas, 57, was also killed in the blast. He lived one home over, but he was next door inside the home that exploded at the time. His wife, who is a teacher at Butler Area School District, daughter and their dog were in their home.

There also was another explosion in 1996 where natural gas was determined to be the cause. Despite this tragedy causing so much heartache, the community has been stepping up to help one another and first responders, donating things like food and water. Now technicians will go door to door to conduct a safety check and relight appliances. If residents aren't home, Peoples Gas said workers will leave a door hanger with customer service contact information and crews will be available on a 24/7 basis until service is fully restored. In a release late Monday, the county said the home where the explosion happened was having "hot water tank issues." The tank was in the basement.

The borough also has not yet received any applications for alterations to any houses there. Hubner said the Zarroli house isn’t as badly damaged as others in the vicinity because of where and how it sits. Hubner said the side of the house facing the explosion, which took most of the concussion, will need to be stripped to look for framing damage.

Another person is still in critical condition at the hospital, and two others have since been released. First responders are done for the night, but police will remain on the scene securing the site. According to authorities, at least three "structures" were destroyed with at least a dozen houses damaged, including windows blown out.

A house exploded in Plum late Saturday morning, killing four people and injuring several others. Police said at least three people were taken to area hospitals with two in stable condition, both of whom have since been released. The third person remained in critical condition as of Saturday night. Any resident who has questions about gas service in the neighborhood can find updates here. Lanny Conley, the chief of the Plum Borough Police Department, said at a news conference Sunday afternoon that four adults and one adolescent had died and been recovered from the scene. The Safety Division appreciates the cooperation of Plum and Allegheny County, along with and various other local and state emergency agencies who have been part of the investigation, as well as residents and others impacted by this incident.

Rustic Ridge homeowners whose houses were damaged by the house explosion could get tax relief

Five people have died, including a teen, following a house explosion in Pennsylvania that caused multiple injuries and several house fires, officials told NBC News. Five people died and three others were injured after a house explosion on a suburban street in Pennsylvania on Saturday spread flames to several nearby homes, shattering windows and causing walls to crumble, the authorities said. It is important to note that I&E investigations are limited – by regulation – to the involvement of, or impact from, utilities and utility systems under the jurisdiction of the PUC, along with natural gas transported by those assets. When Thompson went outside Saturday morning, the family who lived to the right of the house that exploded, Harrison and Kelly Smith, were in her yard with their son, Levi. Peoples gas crews were on site, and a spokesman said gas was turned off in the affected area while the utility worked with emergency responders at the scene. Residents who need a place to go are being directed to Renton Volunteer Fire Department at 1996 Old Mine Rd.

Since the explosion, Zarroli has struggled with understanding why it happened. Soboslay said the borough is continuing to get calls from residents asking for an inspector to look at properties. Plum has yet to receive any applications for demolition of homes in Rustic Ridge, said David Soboslay, the borough’s interim manager. Many doors will need to be rehung because they are sticking from the house moving.

Gov. Josh Shapiro issued a statement regarding the explosion, saying, in part, the administration and the Pennsylvania Emergency Management Agency will continue to be in contact with local officials. While authorities are still investigating what caused this to happen, George says he smelled what may have been gas before the explosion. "Please give us some time to deal with this situation and give the families your respect and give them some space to deal with this tragedy," Conley said. Asked about reports of water pressure issues the firefighters faced, he said the first hydrant tapped into was at the bottom of a nearby hill. So when firefighters tried to get water from another hydrant on top of the hill, the water pressure was not what it should have been. Firefighters were going door-to-door, checking outside gas lines and going inside houses.

While firefighting and recovery efforts were still active at the scene, investigators from the Safety Division began gathering preliminary information from residents, responders, and utilities around that location. I&E has the authority to bring enforcement action, seek emergency orders from the Commission or take other steps to enforce safety regulations and promote public safety. Emergency responders reported people trapped under debris after the blast leveled one house and left two others engulfed in flames, county spokesperson Amie Downs said. Crews from at least 18 fire departments worked to douse the flames with the help of water tankers from Allegheny and Westmoreland counties. PLUM, Pa. (AP) — Five people were found dead after a house explosion in western Pennsylvania that destroyed three structures and damaged at least a dozen others, authorities said Sunday.

Those wells and pipelines were within a 2,500-foot radius of the home. The Department of Environmental Protection announced Friday that its investigators have completed an analysis of preliminary test results from its stray gas investigation. Those results do not indicate a stray gas migration incident. The Andy Zarroli family got the go-ahead Thursday to be able to continue living in their house, although they’re not sure that they will. Immediately after the explosion, Fischer said his neighborhood was flooded with gawkers. Neighbors said the Oravitzes were having issues with their hot water tank — something the Allegheny County Fire Marshal’s Office said it was aware of — and that Thomas, Sebunia and Clontz went over to help troubleshoot.

Investigators determined that it eventually failed after it corroded. This is not the first time a home has exploded in Plum Borough. Just last year in April, a home on Hialeah Drive was leveled. But, Allegheny County is asking people to avoid the area if they have no reason to be there. Neighbors said they smelled gas Tuesday and called the gas company, which confirmed the leaks.

At the municipal center, Boy Scouts and Cub Scouts with Troop 111 were grilling hamburgers and hot dogs for residents and first responders on Sunday. The food came from an event that was canceled Saturday because of the stormy weather, said Jim Plutto, a committee chair with the troop. Food, charging stations and other amenities remain available at the municipal complex on Old Mine Road, borough officials said. “To me, it’s second nature — if someone needs help, people help,” he said. “There’s damage (to his home), but compared to everything else going on, it’s nothing,” he said. Jimmy Stecik was getting things together for a trip to Niagara Falls Saturday morning when he heard the explosion.

This helps with creating more accurate construction documents and also assists in the bidding and construction of the project. The deliverables that a design professional will prepare in this phase include preliminary drawings such as floor plans, elevations, and a site plan, if applicable. You may also see some sketches, or you could ask your architect to do some computer renderings (usually this would be another add-on service) to help you get a sense of how the spaces will look and feel.

Before setting foot on the construction site, a long process has already unfolded. It takes place over several phases, one of the most important being design development. This book will specify the materials that have been selected, and provide things like installation instructions, quality control requirements, and other technical information. These design development sets change many times to accommodate project requirements, client-requested modifications, and licensing authority guidelines before becoming approved for construction.

Our Services

A project begins with conceptual design and then moves into schematic design (SD), wherein the concepts are translated into physical drawings. The design team is responsible for making sure the general contractor executes the plans correctly. Ensuring that everything is going according to plan, especially if you’re not on the job site, requires real-time monitoring. Our live dashboards automatically capture and calculate six project metrics, which are displayed in easy-to-read graphs and charts. No setup is required and there are even customizable reports to delve deeper into the data. Consider BluEntCAD’s experts for your next construction drawing service.

Structural drawings don’t detail surface finishes, partition walls or even mechanical systems, they’re only structural and require approval from the building authority. Design development is an important phase in the architecture design process as it’s easier to make changes on paper (or digitally) than after construction has started. Design development takes more precise measurements and adds details to the final construction documents so the cost estimation is more precise. The design development done by the architect and the design team requires owner input as well as feedback from the general contractor and subcontractors.

For effective collaboration, it’s important that everyone is always working on the most up-to-date documents. With unlimited file storage, ProjectManager’s online construction project management software ensures that everything is updated and at your fingertips. Mechanical drawings show the various mechanical systems in the building including HVAC, elevators or escalators. All HVAC work must first be planned with mechanical drawings and they use the floor and ceiling plans as guides.

We offer vision coverage through DeltaVision in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Entertainment options have diversified with the recent addition of a bowling alley and plans for a large outdoor entertainment facility on Irving Blvd. Long term plans originally called for a boutique hotel and the District will finally host their first, Virgin Hotel. People were not only interested in buying my parts but also wanted me to install them. Seizing the opportunity, DD Designs transitioned from a personal project to a business. All these elements and phases come together to formulate a project from start to finish.

That way the designer, owner and contractors are always available no matter where or when they work. ProjectManager is award-winning software that helps with design development, planning, monitoring and reporting on your construction project. Plus, it’s all on a collaborative platform that connects everyone on the construction project team in real time so they can work better together. While straightforward, the design development and larger architecture design process involve a lot of back and forth.

Connecting with the right contractor is critical for a successful construction project. Not only will you need to accurately forecast your cost estimates, but you need to document the work to find a general contractor with the necessary expertise. The deliverable is a much more detailed set of drawings than in the schematic phase, and a specification book, which can be thought of as written instructions for the drawings. Construction is a culmination of different disciplines coming together to create an infrastructure that is functional and aesthetic at the same time. Let’s take a look at the various construction design stages that are crucial in construction documentation. Delta Dental's plans prioritize preventive care and dentist access, which helps keep health care costs low.

If predictability and more cost-management are valued, our copay product is the best choice. If you want to have a unique motorcycle that matches your individual vision and ideas, then you found the right man to go to. Creating structures that are habitable involves a lengthy process, and one that cannot afford any room for errors.

There’s still give and take between the designer and the architect and costs are estimated but changes could still occur. Structural drawings are engineering drawings that detail the building structure and process. Registered engineers create structural drawings that are based on architectural drawings. These deal with load-carrying parts of the structure and show the size, dimensions and materials that should be used.

In addition, we are a stocking distributor for Williams Chemical Metering Pumps, one of the leading suppliers of electric and pneumatically-driven metering pumps for the global oil and gas industry. The main goal of this phase is to define and develop the important aspects of the project. The SD, DD and CD sets cover the construction design documentation phase. As the name implies, these are section drawings including wall and detail sections. They are drawn to scale, showing clearance, infrastructure, adjacent context and any other helpful references.

We specialize in exterior and interior construction drawing services, millwork shop drawings services, and 3D rendering services, all at a fast turnaround time and with 100% custom pricing. The final set of drawings and specifications will include the information that’s required to obtain a building permit from whichever local authority has jurisdiction (e.g., the city or county). Laguna Design Center is Southern California’s premier destination for home furnishings and design expertise.

The design development phase of the architecture design process is made up of various documents that together define the parameters of the project. These design development documents include civil drawings, architectural drawings, structural drawings and mechanical drawings. The architecture design process, including design development, is a collaborative affair. ProjectManager is online construction project management software that’s designed to connect everyone on the project team in real time. We make it easy to share files, comment on work and tag people to bring them into the conversation. Any updates automatically trigger email notifications and in-app alerts to keep everyone updated.

Designers tend to like the visual workflow kanban boards, construction companies plan schedules and resources on more detailed Gantts and their crews check off work on list views. Owners have a higher view and rather see a calendar with milestones to ensure the project is on target. Our software has multiple project views that are updated automatically and in real time so there’s one source of truth. Architectural drawings are sketches, diagrams, plans or schematics used in the design process and during construction. The drawings show the inside and outside of the structure’s appearance and have precise measurements and details to execute the construction plan. There are multiple drawings with sheets indicating different aspects of the construction including everything from electrical and mechanical systems to plumbing.

Then he began camping there, but when his tent blew away in a storm he decided on a more permanent structure. Hauling stone and wood singlehandedly 45 feet up a ladder, he began building a one-room retreat. The Infinity Room at the House on the Rock was a decades-long dream of Alex Jordan. When a visitor enters the room, it is 30 feet wide, but at the end of its 218-foot length, the room has progressively narrowed to 1 inch in width.

That was his approach when he began to collect dollhouses. He read about dollhouses of note, studied dollhouse plans, and talked to collectors and hobbyists. Soon he determined a collection of at least 265 would be the largest in the world and that number became a goal. SPRING GREEN, WIS. — My wife and I stopped talking to each other two hours into our three-hour self-guided tour of the House on the Rock in Spring Green, a small town west of Madison, Wisconsin.

The couple moved into the house on Christmas Eve, 1949 and lived there the rest of their lives. In September 2006, the Eames House was added to the National Register of Historic Places and designated a National Historic Landmark. It was designated Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument #381 in July 1988. The Eames House, also known as case study #8, is mid-20th century modern architecture. The house was designed by the couple Ray and Charles Eames to serve as their home and studio.

It was built in 1949 by renowned husband-and-wife designers Charles and Ray Eames, to serve as their home and studio.

Dark wood tables, four-poster beds, candelabras and elaborate carpets create a 19th century atmosphere. The walls of the Avila house are made of adobe brick, a material consisting of clay, water and other organic materials like straw. Built in 1911, this was the first mansion in Beverly Hills. The house looks beautiful but from the reviews that I have read, the gardens are truly what people love. Robinson’s department store when they started living in this mansion. The Sowden House, like The Derby House, was designed by Lloyd Wright in 1926.

There’s a sizable parking lot, so you’ll be able to find easy parking unless you come on a very busy day. Jordan finally opened the House to visitors in 1960, charging 50 cents admission. Over time, the Wisconsin attraction has grown to receive more than a million visitors annually. He started by renting the land around the rock, eventually buying the 240-acre property with help from his parents.
